Day in the Life Sessions

Let me tell you a story that has nothing to do with smoothies.

I keep having this childhood memory from when I was living at home with my parents. I would wake up in the morning, head to the kitchen and open the fridge. There was a smoothie in there for me. Every. Single. Morning. Why was this my routine? Well, my dad was on one of his strange “diet trends.” If you knew him, you would laugh. Morning smoothies were the last remaining habit from the “gorilla diet” he put all of us on when his life insurance was coming up for renewal. Ahhh, the morning smoothie. He would wake up at 5AM, sometimes 3 AM because he was usually thinking about his business. After playing on Facebook and working on photos, around 6am, he would make a smoothie for my mom and me. I loved it. I came to expect it. Looking back at it, I realized it was just a small way he showed us love. When I moved out of my parents’ house, I didn’t get smoothies anymore.

And when my dad passed away, I realized that I would never get smoothies again.

Something so small, you wouldn’t think that that's the thing you miss the most. But it’s all of these routine moments added together that show your family dynamic, your traditions, your inside jokes…your “thing” that you do with the people you see every single day. It’s what makes your family your family.

Of course you have the big moments. The first steps. The first birthdays. The graduation day. The moving out day. The wedding day. And those days are, and always will be, monumental. Because they’re the firsts.

But what happens after the firsts?

Everyday in between...
